In August of ’21, Tori and I took her mother, Dorothy, on a day trip to Block Island, RI. After an early morning drive to New London, we set off on a windy ferry ride to the island. Tori and I had only been dating for a few months at this point, so this trip was a great chance for her mother and I to get to know each other. My not-so-hidden agenda was to get Tori on a moped to continue planting the seeds for her to want to get her motorcycle license.
After docking on the island, we made our way to pick up our rental mopeds. Tori and Dorothy had never ridden anything with two wheels, and our brief training included getting the little scooter off the center stand (more challenging when your toes barely touch the ground), a brief overview of the controls, and a lap of their gravel parking lot.
From there we set off on a ride around the perimeter of the small island, stopping off at a few beaches and landmarks along the way. Tori and Dorothy both picked up riding pretty quickly, despite the hectic beach town traffic and crowded streets.
After lunch we rode to a secret beach that a coworker told me about, which required a bit of technically-prohibited off-pavement riding on the scooters. After the beach excursion we hit a burger joint for dinner before heading back to town to drop off the bikes. A bit of ice-cream and souvenir shopping killed our remaining hour before heading back to the ferry for our ride back to Connecticut.
I never got around to editing this footage, but we brought our home helmets and I was able to get some footage of Tori and Dorothy as we explored the island. Apologies for the skewed angle — I forgot to adjust my lens when I swapped helmets.
